M1911 Pistol in Build 42 — Damage, Weight, Range and Verdict

Build 42 M1911 Pistol stats: 0.9–1.2 damage, max range 12 tiles, weight 1.5, condition 10. Why its numbers sit awkwardly inside the pistol set.

FAQ

Is the M1911 or the M9 the better pistol?
Different ends of the same weight. The M1911 trades the M9's reach — 12 tiles against 15 — for a higher damage floor: 0.9 starts where the M9 ends. If you engage at distance take the M9, if you expect close panic shots take this. The B-F outperforms both for half a weight unit.
Why do people say the Patrol Revolver is simply the better gun?
On paper it is: same weight 1.5, same max range 12 tiles, and 0.95–1.4 damage against the M1911's 0.9–1.2. The M1911 keeps one advantage the dual-sourced fields cannot show — a box magazine instead of a cylinder, which means a faster rhythm when a group is coming.
What does max range 12 mean in practice?
It is the ceiling of the gun's reach, not a guarantee anything connects at that distance. Effective fighting range is shorter; the firearms guide covers the real envelope.

The Trade in One Line

The M1911 sits in the uncomfortable middle of the pistol worksheet. Its 0.9–1.2 damage starts higher than the M9 ends, but it gives back 3 tiles of reach at the same weight 1.5 — and the Patrol Revolver matches both its weight and its range while hitting harder. The one thing the numbers cannot take away from it is the magazine.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.9 – 1.2. A solid handgun floor — first shots that actually drop things sooner than the M9’s 0.6 start — but the ceiling loses to the B-F Pistol’s 1.6, and every gun here still eats a shotgun’s 1.5 – 2.2 for breakfast.
  • Max range 12 tiles. The worksheet’s short end among pistols. It is a ceiling, not an effective range — past the middle of a yard expect misses; see the firearms guide.
  • Weight 1.5. Tied with the M9 and the Patrol Revolver as the set’s easy-carry class; a spare one costs you nothing you will notice.
  • Condition 10. Same as every firearm in the set — the melee comparison is unkind: the baseball bat you could carry instead has 15. Wear is Maintenance-gated (skill leveling).
  • Report. A handgun shot still brings the neighborhood; in Louisville treat every trigger pull as the opening move of a fight, not the closing one.
  • Feed. Magazine-fed — versus the Patrol Revolver at identical weight, damage and range, the reload rhythm between two of the shots is the M1911’s entire reason to exist.

When Not to Use It

  • When the Patrol Revolver is on the same rack. Same weight 1.5, same 12-tile ceiling, more damage (0.95 – 1.4). Take the revolver unless the cylinder’s slower between-shots rhythm is unacceptable to you.
  • When you can pay half a weight unit. The B-F (1 – 1.6, 17 tiles, weight 2) beats it on both axes that matter.
  • At distance. 12 tiles is the worst pistol reach except the snub-nose SN38; if the target is still across the field, the M9’s 15 is the right gun.

How It Compares

Handgun Damage Weight Max range Condition
M1911 Pistol 0.9 – 1.2 1.5 12 10
M9 Pistol 0.6 – 1 1.5 15 10
Patrol Revolver 0.95 – 1.4 1.5 12 10
B-F Pistol 1 – 1.6 2 17 10

The table says the quiet part: three guns share weight 1.5, and the M1911 is the only one of them that loses on both damage and range to someone else at the same weight. It stays on this wiki because it stays on this worksheet — dual-sourced and deployable — and because between two shots into an approaching pair, a magazine is a magazine. Where firearms rank overall: weapon tier list.

Sources & Verification

Every printed figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.Pistol2:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — M1911 Pistol Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same weight, damage and max-range fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement — nobody fired this gun in a test sandbox for this page. The noise value and the magazine capacity exist only on the PZwiki side (pzfans has no comparable column), so they are described qualitatively above and never printed as numbers. Spawn locations are omitted for the same one-source reason. PZwiki stamps most firearm pages against builds older than 42.21, so treat this as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to move these numbers eventually.
