Fishing Rod in Build 42 — Condition 3, the Shortest Fuse in the Whole Table
Build 42 fishing rod stats: 0.2–0.3 damage, weight 1, condition 3, knockback 0.3, 5% crit. A dual-purpose tool whose weapon life is measured in a handful of swings.
FAQ
Why is the fishing rod's condition only 3?
Is the fishing rod ever the right weapon?
It fishes — does that justify carrying it?
The Trade in One Line
The fishing rod is the shortest fuse in the game: condition 3, below every other weapon we can source, bolted to a 0.2–0.3 damage band and a 5% crit. Its 0.3 knockback and 1 weight are real, but the durability number is the headline — this is a tool you happen to be able to hit with, briefly.
What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified
- Damage 0.2 – 0.3. A narrow, bottom-of-table band; the hand fork at 0.2–0.4 edges its ceiling, and no real weapon starts this low.
- Condition 3. The single worst durability in the sourced table — the fragile scalpel still doubles it at 5. It is a few swings, then gone.
- Knockback 0.3. Its one redeeming column: a nudge tier with the trowel and meat cleaver, well above the 0.01 cutlery.
- Weight 1. Light enough that the 3-condition penalty is not made worse by carrying cost.
- Crit 5%. The table’s floor alongside the letter opener — on a 0.2 base it is meaningless.
When Not to Use It
- For any deliberate fight. Condition 3 cannot survive an encounter you plan; grab the crowbar at 15 or the bat.
- When a kitchen blade is near. Even the fragile scalpel carries 5 condition and a higher ceiling; the rod is the weaker of the emergency tier.
- Where the push is not enough. 0.3 staggers one zombie and only briefly; against a crowd it is a stick you will snap.
How It Compares
| Weapon | Damage | Weight | Condition | Knockback | Crit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fishing Rod | 0.2 – 0.3 | 1 | 3 | 0.3 | 5% |
| Hand Fork | 0.2 – 0.4 | 1 | 6 | 0.01 | 10% |
| Gardening Trowel | 0.2 – 0.4 | 1 | 6 | 0.3 | 30% |
| Scalpel | 0.1 – 0.4 | 0.3 | 5 | 0.01 | 10% |
The rod’s distinguishing number is the saddest in the table: condition 3, half of its trowel and hand fork cousins. Against the trowel it loses on durability, ceiling and crit while sharing 0.3 knockback and weight 1; against the scalpel it is heavier and more fragile for a tighter, lower band. That is the whole case for why the weapon tier list keeps the fishing rod out of weapons discussions.
Sources & Verification
Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.FishingRod:
| Source | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PZwiki — Fishing Rod | Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) | Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API |
| pzfans — Weapon item tables | Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” | Independent rendering of the same fields |
What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
