Scalpel in Build 42 — 0.3 Weight and a 0.1–0.4 Swing That Is Nearly Nothing

Build 42 scalpel stats: 0.1–0.4 damage, weight 0.3, condition 5, knockback 0.01, 10% crit. The lightest weapon here hits like one: a 0.1 floor, 5 condition.

FAQ

Is the scalpel worth carrying as a weapon?
No, on the sourced numbers. Its 0.1–0.4 damage is bottom-of-table, its 5 condition is the fragile tier, and its 0.01 knockback interrupts nothing. The only stat that stands out is weight 0.3 — it is the lightest weapon we list, which is an argument for it as a last-ditch item you never chose to hold.
How does it compare to the letter opener?
The [letter opener](/items/letter-opener/) is worse: a flat 0.1–0.1 damage that never rolls higher, against the scalpel's 0.1–0.4 with a real ceiling. Both share weight 0.3 and condition 5, and both sit in the 5–10% crit cellar. The scalpel wins only because its ceiling is not nailed to the floor.
Is the scalpel a medical item first?
That is the sensible read of a 0.3-weight, 5-condition blade with sub-0.4 damage — it is not built to fight. We publish only the combat-relevant fields both sources agree on, and we do not document medical uses here because neither source gives us a second opinion to check.

The Trade in One Line

The scalpel trades almost nothing for the lightest footprint in the table — weight 0.3 — and its numbers are correspondingly forgettable: 0.1–0.4 damage, 0.01 knockback, condition 5, a 10% crit. It is an item you pick up because it is there, not because a stat asked you to.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.1 – 0.4. A floor of 0.1 is the table’s lowest alongside the letter opener; the 0.4 ceiling barely clears the bread knife.
  • Weight 0.3. Its one standout — tied with the paring knife, letter opener and ice pick as the lightest on these pages.
  • Condition 5. Disposable tier — the kitchen knife doubles it at 10 and the crowbar triples it at 15. Maintenance is irrelevant when the cap is this low; see the skill leveling guide.
  • Knockback 0.01. Cutlery none. Only the meat cleaver at 0.3 pushes in this family.
  • Crit 10%. The low tier (with the paring and fillet knives); only the 5% letter opener and fishing rod sit under it. On a 0.4 ceiling it is decoration.

When Not to Use It

  • When any blade over it is in reach. The hunting knife (0.6–1.2, 50%) makes the scalpel irrelevant; even the paring knife keeps the 0.3 weight and adds double the durability.
  • For anything deliberate. 5 condition is one bad encounter. This is a weapon you fall back to, not one you select.
  • Where panic bites hardest. A 0.1 floor erodes fastest under flat damage penalties — the tier list’s formula is brutal to small numbers; read mood and panic.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Crit
Scalpel 0.1 – 0.4 0.3 5 0.01 10%
Letter Opener 0.1 – 0.1 0.3 5 0.01 5%
Paring Knife 0.3 – 0.4 0.3 10 0.01 10%
Bread Knife 0.1 – 0.4 1 5 0.01 15%

The clearest row: the scalpel and paring knife are both 0.3 weight, but the paring knife carries 10 condition and a 0.3 floor where the scalpel has 5 and a 0.1 floor. Within the same weight class the scalpel is simply the weaker buy. Its only win is over the letter opener — same footprint, a real ceiling instead of a nailed-flat 0.1. The weapon tier list treats this entire stratum as emergency-only.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.Scalpel:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Scalpel Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
