M9 Pistol in Build 42 — Damage, Weight, Range and Verdict
Build 42 M9 Pistol stats: 0.6–1 damage, max range 15 tiles, weight 1.5, condition 10. Where the default sidearm sits against the M1911 and the B-F.
FAQ
Which pistol should I carry — M9, M1911 or B-F?
Is a pistol better than a melee weapon?
Why does the M9 wear out so fast?
The Trade in One Line
The M9 buys range no blade in the game can match, at a weight you never argue with. 0.6–1 damage is the cheap end of the firearm worksheet — the pistols tier exists for emergencies, not for hunts — but 15 tiles of max reach means a zombie dies while it is still on the far side of the yard. The bill is condition 10 and a report that turns a clean pick-off into a crowd-control problem.
What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified
- Damage 0.6 – 1. The floor of the gun set. Assume more than one shot per target — the crowbar’s 0.6 – 1.15 band overlaps this one entirely, and the pistol’s advantage over it is distance, not damage.
- Max range 15 tiles. The printed figure is the ceiling of the gun’s reach, not a hit guarantee — the firearms guide covers what actually connects. Even so, no baseball bat can answer it across a yard.
- Weight 1.5. Pocket change — lighter than a machete’s 2 and a full unit under the shotgun’s 4. That is the argument for a sidearm as permanent inventory rather than a parked pickup.
- Condition 10. Uniform across all 20 verified firearms. Durability is where melee tools win: the bat carries 15. Wear rate is gated by Maintenance — see the skill leveling guide.
- Report. Loud enough that one shot inside a town drags strays off the road. In Louisville or the high-risk POIs, assume the street heard it.
- Feed. A box magazine with no cylinder to work between shots — the set’s revolvers force a slower rhythm, and that is the real edge the comparison table cannot show.
When Not to Use It
- When silence has a price. A straggler you shoot at 15 tiles announces you to everything between here and the next block. A blade kills the same zombie quietly.
- When it is your only answer to a crowd. Damage that starts at 0.6 does not cycle through a group; when they close, the sledgehammer’s 2 – 3 plus knockback is the better tool.
- When the B-F is on the same shelf. It out-damages and out-ranges the M9 for half a weight unit — see B-F Pistol.
How It Compares
| Handgun | Damage | Weight | Max range | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M9 Pistol | 0.6 – 1 | 1.5 | 15 | 10 |
| M1911 Pistol | 0.9 – 1.2 | 1.5 | 12 | 10 |
| B-F Pistol | 1 – 1.6 | 2 | 17 | 10 |
| Magnum | 1 – 1.6 | 2 | 18 | 10 |
Read it as a ladder: the M9 is the light gun with reach, the M1911 is the same weight giving up 3 tiles for a higher floor, and the B-F and the Magnum sit at the top of the handgun sheet — the revolver actually out-ranges the B-F by one tile at identical weight and damage, giving up only the magazine’s faster rhythm. The M9’s honest job is the sidearm you keep because weight 1.5 never argues; where guns rank overall is in the weapon tier list.
Sources & Verification
Every printed figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.Pistol:
| Source | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PZwiki — M9 Pistol | Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) | Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API |
| pzfans — Weapon item tables | Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” | Independent rendering of the same weight, damage and max-range fields |
What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement — nobody fired this gun in a test sandbox for this page. The noise value and the magazine capacity exist only on the PZwiki side (pzfans has no comparable column), so they are described qualitatively above and never printed as numbers. Spawn locations are omitted for the same one-source reason. PZwiki stamps most firearm pages against builds older than 42.21, so treat this as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to move these numbers eventually.
