Meat Cleaver in Build 42 — The Only Kitchen Blade That Pushes Back

Build 42 meat cleaver stats: 0.4–0.8 damage, weight 1, condition 10, knockback 0.3, 15% crit. A kitchen blade with real stagger — rare among the knives we list.

FAQ

Is the meat cleaver better than a kitchen knife?
For fighting, yes, and knockback is the whole reason: 0.3 against the [kitchen knife](/items/kitchen-knife/)'s 0.01 means a cleaver hit can interrupt a zombie between swings. The kitchen knife counters with a higher ceiling (0.7 against the cleaver's 0.8 is close, but its crit is 25% against the cleaver's 15%) and less weight (0.7 against 1).
Why is the cleaver's knockback unusual?
Every other short blade we can source sits at knockback 0.01 — effectively none. The cleaver at 0.3 is the only kitchen-class blade with a stagger number, sharing it with blunt weapons like the [pipe wrench](/items/pipe-wrench/) and the [machete](/items/machete/).
Should I carry the cleaver over the hunting knife?
Only if staggering matters more to you than damage. The [hunting knife](/items/hunting-knife/) hits for 0.6–1.2 with a 50% crit but knocks back 0.01; the cleaver hits for less and crits at 15% but pushes at 0.3. Crowd control versus burst — your pick.

The Trade in One Line

The meat cleaver is the kitchen blade that behaves like a weapon: knockback 0.3 is the one number that separates it from the entire cutlery family, all of which sit at 0.01. Its hits stagger. What it gives up is punch and luck — 0.4–0.8 damage and a 15% crit in the table’s low tier.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.4 – 0.8. Mid-cutlery — above the kitchen knife’s 0.3–0.7 floor-to-ceiling overlap, well under the hunting knife’s 1.2 top. Not a one-shot weapon.
  • Knockback 0.3. Its signature. The only kitchen-class blade in the sourced table that pushes; every knife and scalpel is at 0.01. Same stagger tier as the machete and fire axe.
  • Weight 1. The same as the hunting knife, a touch under the frying pan’s 1.5. A cleaver never argues with your inventory.
  • Condition 10. Average for a blade — the fragile tier (bread, steak, fillet) is at 5, blunt weapons like the crowbar at 15. Drain runs on the Maintenance skill — skill leveling guide.
  • Crit 15%. The low tier — matched by the rolling pin and bread knife; only the 10% blades and the 5% letter opener sit lower. The cleaver trades luck for stagger on purpose.

When Not to Use It

  • When burst matters more than stagger. The hunting knife’s 0.6–1.2 at 50% crit ends a single zombie faster; the cleaver only wins if you need the 0.3 push.
  • When you want durability. Condition 10 on a 0.4-ceiling weapon is a poor durability-per-kill ratio. The bat and crowbar at 15 keep going.
  • Against a real crowd. 0.3 staggers one; it does not flatten a line the way the sledgehammer’s 1.0 does.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Crit
Meat Cleaver 0.4 – 0.8 1 10 0.3 15%
Kitchen Knife 0.3 – 0.7 0.7 10 0.01 25%
Hunting Knife 0.6 – 1.2 1 10 0.01 50%
Nightstick 0.6 – 1.1 1.5 15 0.3 25%

The table’s lesson: the cleaver and the kitchen knife are the same knife with a different emphasis — cleaver buys 0.3 knockback, kitchen knife buys crit and weight. But the nightstick row shows the better version of “a light weapon that pushes”: same 0.3 knockback, 15 condition instead of 10, and a higher damage band for half a unit more weight. Read the weapon tier list before settling on any kitchen blade.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.MeatCleaver:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Meat Cleaver Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
