⚠️ Content Pending Full Verification

These base stats were rewritten on 2026-10-01 after an audit found most of them wrong: the page had carried values from two sources that are now unreachable. Every number below is agreed field-for-field by two independent sources we can still read (PZwiki's item infoboxes and pzfans' weapon tables, matched by `Base.*` item ID). Neither is our own in-game measurement, and PZwiki stamps most pages against an older 42.10-era build, so read this as 42.20-era agreement, not 42.21-verified. Class tiers are our ranking of those values, not a developer ranking.

TL;DR — Grab These First Cross-Verified

Tier Weapon Type Why
S Fire Axe Axe Fastest of the heavy axes, common spawn; damage 0.8 – 2 (Base.Axe)
S Machete Long Blade 2 – 3 damage, + long reach, condition 13
A Pickaxe Axe 1 – 2.2 damage, mining + weapon multi-use
A Crowbar Blunt 0.6-1.15 damage, sturdy condition (15)
B Baseball Bat Short Blunt 0.8-1.1 damage, 0.5 knockback (best crowd control)
C Kitchen Knife Short Blade 0.3-0.7 damage (weak, and condition 10 dulls fast)

Weapon Class Damage Ranges — Build 42 Base Stats Cross-Verified

Damage Formula Breakdown — Why Your Weapon Feels Weak

Real damage per swing = Base Damage × Strength Bonus × Skill Bonus × Moodle Multipliers − Panic Penalty − Stress Penalty

Factor Multiplier / Penalty Notes
Strength Lv.5 +25% damage Flat bonus, not multiplier
Axe Skill Lv.5 +50% damage Applies only to Axe-class weapons
Panic (per level above 1) −0.1 damage flat Not a multiplier. Panic 3 = −0.2
Stress (per level above 1) −0.1 damage flat Same as panic
Fatigue (10-20 swings) −10% damage, −25% speed Moodle multiplier
Fatigue (20-30 swings) −30% damage, −50% speed + stumble Moodle multiplier
Torso hit ×1.0 Standard
Head hit ×1.5 Highest damage target
Leg hit ×0.1 Almost nothing. Don’t aim for legs

Example: Panic Lv.3 + Stress Lv.2 = −0.5 damage. Kitchen Knife base 0.3 → −0.2 → clamped to 0.0. Literally doing no damage. This is why short blade weapons are broken in crowds.

Weapon-Skill Synergy — Which Class to Level

Your Weapon Skill to Prioritize Why
Axe (Sledgehammer, Fire Axe) Axe Every level = more damage + faster swing. The best combat skill
Long Blade (Machete, Sword) Long Blade Skill Lv.5 = +50% damage, faster swing speed
Short Blunt (Baseball Bat) Short Blunt Knockback improves with skill. More crowd control
Blunt (Crowbar) Short Blunt Crowbar technically counts as Short Blunt for XP
Firearms Aiming + Reloading Precision aiming headshots = instant kills at range

Weapon Tier FAQ

Q: Is the Sledgehammer actually S-tier? It swings so slow.

Yes. 2 – 3 damage with a full 1.0 knockback — the highest in its class — means one swing can kill a zombie at full health and put the next one on the ground. Weight 6 and condition 10 are the tax: it slows you down and it will not last. The slow swing is countered by the fact you only need one swing per zombie. Use it in open areas where you can take turns — the fatigue thresholds behind that strategy are in the Survival Basics guide.

Q: What’s the best day-1 weapon?

Crowbar. Condition 15 = won’t break. Damage 0.6-1.15 is enough if you manage fatigue. And it doubles as a barricade tool — the full day-1 priority order is in the Survival Basics guide. Axe is better but rarer on day 1.

Q: Why is Baseball Bat A-tier when it only does 0.3-0.7 damage?

Knockback. 0.5 knockback means you can hit a zombie, send it flying, hit the next one, repeat. In narrow corridors, you can clear 5+ zombies without ever being in danger. It’s crowd control, not damage — and at condition 15 the bat is also the most durable of the short blunt group.

Q: Should I waste a Blacksmith forge on a Sword Blade?

Only if you are already Lv.8 Blacksmithing, and we cannot tell you the damage — neither source we can read publishes a damage range for the crafted Sword Blade, so the “1.8-3.5 base, up to 7.8 per swing” figure this page used to print has been dropped. What both sources do confirm is weight 2 and condition 13, which makes it the longest-lasting blade in the game and the reason the class is worth the grind to reach. The reforging XP loop that gets you to Lv.8 is in the Blacksmithing guide.

Q: Why can’t I just level Short Blade and use Kitchen Knives?

Short blades are weak in Build 42. Even at Short Blade Lv.8 + Strength 8 + no panic, a Kitchen Knife does 0.3 × (1 + 0.8 × 0.25) × (1 + 0.8 × 0.5) = 0.3 × 1.2 × 1.4 = 0.5 damage. Zombies have 1.0-2.0 HP. You’d need 2-4 swings per zombie, and the knife only has 10 condition. It’s not viable. The “70% nerf from B41” figure this page used to print traced to a source we can no longer reach; what both surviving sources confirm is the absolute numbers above, and the player-reported “Short Blade nerfed to the floor” thread says the same thing independently.

Sources & Verification

Source Type Sections Used
trombospace.net — Damage Calculator Community tool — unreachable when checked 2026-10-01 (connection failed directly and through our proxy) Damage formula, Panic/Stress penalty, moodle multipliers — carried over from an earlier fetch, now unverifiable
bamboogaming.net — Weapons Database Recipe DB — rate-limited (HTTP 429) when re-checked 2026-10-01 Weapon damage ranges, condition values — not re-confirmable today
pzwiki.net — Kitchen Knife and sibling item pages Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Per-item infoboxes via its MediaWiki API: damage, weight, condition, knockback, crit. Most pages stamped {{Page version|42.10.0}}
pzfans.com — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4”, per-row Base.* item IDs Second independent reading of the same fields; agrees with PZwiki field-for-field on every row we publish
game-rack.com — Build 42 Weapons Guide Deep-dive playtest Axe class comparison, day-1 weapon picks
TIS Forums — “Short Blade nerfed to the floor” Player-reported forum thread Short Blade nerf confirmation
bisecthosting.com — B42 Weapon Stats Third-party data Knockback values, weapon weight verification

How these numbers were settled. The table above previously carried values from two sources that are now unreachable, and re-checking every row against the sources we can still read showed that 12 of 16 rows were wrong — Sledgehammer was listed at 2.5–4.5 with weight 4.0 where both current sources say 2–3 at weight 6, and Baseball Bat at 0.3–0.7 where both say 0.8–1.1. Every row now printed is a value those two sources agree on field-for-field, matched by Base.* item ID. Rows with no coverage in either (Splitting Axe, Cricket Bat, and the crafted Sword Blade damage) now say so instead of keeping the old figure.

Neither source is our own measurement: pzwiki stamps most pages as last checked against an older build and pzfans claims 42.20.4, so read all of it as 42.20-era agreement, not 42.21-verified. The one claim we could not place in either source was the ‘70% nerf from B41’ line, and it is gone.
