Letter Opener in Build 42 — Flat 0.1 Damage, the Weakest Swing in the Game
Build 42 letter opener stats: 0.1–0.1 damage, weight 0.3, condition 5, knockback 0.01, 5% crit. A flat minimum that is also its maximum: the weakest swing.

Should I ever pick it up?
The Trade in One Line
The letter opener is the bottom pin of the damage scale: a flat 0.1–0.1, so there is no lucky swing to hope for and no bad roll to curse — every hit is the same minimum. Its only redeeming column is weight 0.3, and the scalpel matches that while rolling higher.
What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified
- Damage 0.1 – 0.1. The table’s floor, and the only other flat weapon besides the katana’s 8–8 at the ceiling. A minimum equal to the maximum means zero variance and zero punch.
- Weight 0.3. Light, tied with the scalpel, paring knife and ice pick — but weight is the only stat it wins on.
- Condition 5. Disposable tier with the scalpel and bread/steak/fillet knives. See the skill leveling guide for why Maintenance cannot rescue a 5-cap.
- Knockback 0.01. The standard cutlery none; nothing is interrupted, nothing falls.
- Crit 5%. The table’s joint-lowest crit rate, tied with the fishing rod — even the 10% blades double it, and on a flat 0.1 base it means nothing.
When Not to Use It
- Almost always. If a hunting knife (0.6–1.2, 50%) is anywhere nearby, it supersedes the letter opener on every sourced field.
- Under any stress. A 0.1 damage floor is the value the tier list’s flat panic penalties can drive to zero; a weapon with no ceiling has nothing to spare. Read mood and panic.
- As a real backup. The scalpel is the same 0.3 weight with a 0.4 ceiling — carry the stronger of the two near-novelties.
How It Compares
| Weapon | Damage | Weight | Condition | Knockback | Crit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Letter Opener | 0.1 – 0.1 | 0.3 | 5 | 0.01 | 5% |
| Scalpel | 0.1 – 0.4 | 0.3 | 5 | 0.01 | 10% |
| Bread Knife | 0.1 – 0.4 | 1 | 5 | 0.01 | 15% |
| Paring Knife | 0.3 – 0.4 | 0.3 | 10 | 0.01 | 10% |
The first two rows are the whole story: identical weight and condition, but the scalpel rolls to 0.4 and crits at 10% where the letter opener is stuck at a flat 0.1 and 5%. The paring knife then beats both on durability while keeping the same 0.3 footprint. The letter opener’s honest use is as a reference point for how weak a sourced weapon can be — see the weapon tier list for where the real picks live.
Sources & Verification
Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.LetterOpener:
| Source | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PZwiki — Letter Opener | Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) | Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API |
| pzfans — Weapon item tables | Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” | Independent rendering of the same fields, including the flat 0.1–0.1 damage |
What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
