FAQ

Is the nightstick better than the baseball bat?
It trades differently. The [baseball bat](/items/baseball-bat/) hits 0.8–1.1 and knocks back 0.5 with a 40% crit; the nightstick hits 0.6–1.1, knocks back only 0.3, crits 25% — but weighs 1.5 against the bat's 2. Both last condition 15. The bat is the stronger weapon; the nightstick is the lighter one that survives just as long.
What does condition 15 buy me?
It is the joint-highest durability of the light weapons we source, tied with the [crowbar](/items/crowbar/) and bat, well clear of the [golf club](/items/golf-club/)'s 5. A nightstick will not break on you mid-run — see the [skill leveling guide](/guides/skill-leveling/) for how Maintenance stretches it further.
Why is knockback 0.3 a real cost?
Because 0.3 is the [machete](/items/machete/) and [fire axe](/items/fire-axe/) tier — a nudge, not a shove. Against a crowd, the 0.5 bat/crowbar/hammer weapons and the [sledgehammer](/items/sledgehammer/)'s 1.0 buy distance per hit; the nightstick wins endurance fights, not space fights.

The Trade in One Line

The nightstick sells longevity at a discount on weight: 0.6–1.1 damage with condition 15 at only 1.5, so it outlasts the club and the pan while carrying lighter than the bat. Everything else about it is middling, and knockback 0.3 is the one number you actively give up.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.6 – 1.1. A dependable band — floor equal to the crowbar, ceiling equal to the bat; nothing dramatic, nothing embarrassing.
  • Condition 15. The joint-best of the light weapons, matched only by the bat and crowbar, three times the golf club’s 5 and half again the pan’s 10. Maintenance drains it slowly on a high skill — skill leveling guide.
  • Weight 1.5. Half a unit under the bat/crowbar — the lightest way to get condition-15 durability.
  • Knockback 0.3. Its weak column: nudge-tier like the machete, a step under the bat and hammer at 0.5.
  • Crit 25%. Middle — the hunting knife’s 50% and bat’s 40% are the crit kings; 25% is a fair rate on a solid base.

When Not to Use It

  • When you need a crowd off you. 0.3 knockback does not make space; take the bat or crowbar at 0.5, or the sledgehammer at 1.0.
  • When one swing must count. 0.6–1.1 is two-swing territory; the machete’s 2–3 ends fights the nightstick drags out.
  • When weight is not the constraint. If your pack is fine, the bat is the same durability (15) with better crit and knockback, and costs only half a unit more.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Crit
Nightstick 0.6 – 1.1 1.5 15 0.3 25%
Baseball Bat 0.8 – 1.1 2 15 0.5 40%
Crowbar 0.6 – 1.15 2 15 0.5 20%
Claw Hammer 0.5 – 1 1.5 10 0.5 20%

The nightstick’s argument is weight-for-durability: the only weapon in the table with condition 15 under weight 2. The bat and crowbar match its life but weigh more and shove harder; the claw hammer is lighter-cousin territory but loses five condition and a little ceiling to it. If your build cares about carrying capacity and a weapon that simply does not break, the nightstick is the sourced answer — see the weapon tier list for how it stacks class-wide.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.Nightstick:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Nightstick Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
