FAQ

JS-14 or M16?
Same damage (1–1.6), same 30-tile max range, same condition 10 — the two columns that differ are weight (3.5 against 4) and feed size, where the M16 carries the worksheet's biggest magazine. On foot the JS-14 is the better purchase; holding a fence line against a herd is the one job where the M16 earns its extra half unit.
Why not the L94 — same weight, more damage?
Because the L94's 1.2–2 band comes with a far smaller magazine than the JS-14's feed — see the L94 page. The JS-14 trades the damage ceiling for more shots between reloads. Placed-shot hunters take the L94; anyone expecting to work through a group takes the JS-14.
Is 30 tiles enough reach to commit to a rifle?
It is double every shotgun on the sheet and the rung where the field stops being contested — the 40-tier buys ten more tiles for half a unit to a full one of weight. For most engagements 30 is already past the distance where anything reaches you first.

The Trade in One Line

The JS-14 is the efficiency rifle: everything the M16 does on the dual-sourced combat columns — 1–1.6 damage, 30-tile max — for half a weight unit less at 3.5, paid back in a magazine that runs out sooner. Among the 30-tile guns it is the lightest that still feeds itself between shots, and among rifles that is a whole tier of compromise removed.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 1 – 1.6. The mid-band: equals the M16, trails the 1.2 – 2 rifles (L94, M1A). Against anything that closes, it equals the handguns with thirty tiles of warning attached.
  • Max range 30 tiles. Full rifle ceiling — twice the shotgun family — and a cap rather than a promise (firearms guide). The number that matters is what it buys: fights started on your clock.
  • Weight 3.5. Tied with the L94 as the lightest stocked rifle — only the Trapper Carbine at 3.2 goes lighter among long guns, and it gives back reach and punch to do it.
  • Condition 10. Set-wide; the rifle class grants no durability. Maintenance governs wear (skill leveling guide).
  • Report. A full rifle crack — same noise conversation every stocked gun starts in Louisville and the high-risk POIs; nothing about the lighter frame keeps the neighborhood uninvited.
  • Feed. Box-magazine, mid-sized: faster to carry than the M16’s appetite, slower to run dry than the bolt-style tier — the middle of the reload-rhythm spectrum, which is the whole JS-14 design in one line.

When Not to Use It

  • When you are holding a line, not moving one. The M16’s deeper feed is worth its half unit exactly once per fight — when the fight is bigger than your magazine; see M16 Assault Rifle.
  • When one shot should end one target. The L94 matches this weight and out-damages it — take L94 Rifle if you shoot rarely and precisely.
  • When 30 tiles is 40 short. The top-tier rifles carry 1.2 – 2 to the longest column on the sheet for one more unit (MSR788 Rifle).

How It Compares

30-tier rifle Damage Weight Max range Condition
JS-14 Rifle 1 – 1.6 3.5 30 10
L94 Rifle 1.2 – 2 3.5 30 10
M16 Assault Rifle 1 – 1.6 4 30 10
MSR700 Rifle 1 – 1.6 4 30 10

The 30-tile tier splits into two arguments and the JS-14 sits at the crossing point: it matches the M16 and MSR700’s numbers at the L94’s weight, and its feed is the only column the table cannot print. Buy it when reach and grams both matter; buy the others when one of the two stops mattering. Where rifles rank overall: weapon tier list.

Sources & Verification

Every printed figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.JS14_Rifle:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — JS-14 Rifle Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same weight, damage and max-range fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement — nobody fired this gun in a test sandbox for this page. The noise value and the magazine capacity exist only on the PZwiki side (pzfans has no comparable column), so they are described qualitatively above and never printed as numbers. Spawn locations are omitted for the same one-source reason. PZwiki stamps most firearm pages against builds older than 42.21, so treat this as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to move these numbers eventually.
