FAQ

Why is the JS-14 listed as the better buy?
Because the dual-sourced columns say so: identical damage (1–1.6), identical max range (30 tiles), identical condition 10, and weight 3.5 against the MSR700's 4. The MSR700 keeps only what the columns cannot show — a slim feed that rewards deliberate shooting over the JS-14's faster rhythm. Read both pages and pick your reload philosophy, not your stats.
What is the MSR700 actually for?
One clean shot at a real distance: 30 tiles of ceiling, enough punch band to end most single targets at the top of that reach, and a magazine sized for placement rather than volume. It is the entry point to scoped-style patience before paying the 40-tier's weight ([M1A Rifle](/items/m1a-rifle/)).
Shotgun or MSR700 as a first rifle?
Different questions. The shotgun's 1.5–2.2 is the worksheet's hardest hit at 12 tiles; the MSR700's 1–1.6 at 30 means most fights never get close enough to test which number is bigger. If the answer to 'what found me first' is usually a mob, take the boom; if it is usually a straggler at the treeline, take the rifle.

The Trade in One Line

The MSR700 is the deliberate 30-tile rifle: everything the JS-14 does on the verified combat columns, at a half-unit more weight and a feed built for shots that count rather than shots that fly. Its damage band is the mid-tier’s 1–1.6 and its reach is the same 30-tile ceiling — the rifle’s real offering is patience, priced honestly.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 1 – 1.6. The mid-band, shared with the M16 and the JS-14: rifle delivery, not rifle punch — the 1.2 – 2 tier begins upstairs at the L94 (weapon tier list).
  • Max range 30 tiles. Full stocked-rifle reach — two and a half times the pump shotgun’s column — and a ceiling, not a promise (firearms guide).
  • Weight 4. Shotgun-tier carry, the same as the full-size pumps; a scoped rifle does not weigh less for looking precise.
  • Condition 10. Set-wide. Maintenance gates wear like every other gun here (skill leveling guide).
  • Report. A proper rifle crack — the same town-clearing conversation as the M16, fired at half the volume of fire; every shot you will take is one the block can place. Loud use in Louisville is a scheduled operation, same as the high-risk POIs guidance says.
  • Feed. The slimmest magazine among the 30-tile rifles — the MSR700’s identity: nothing between you and a placed shot, and a reload after almost every one of them.

When Not to Use It

  • When stats alone decide. The JS-14 equals every dual-sourced combat number of this gun at 3.5 — see JS-14 Rifle.
  • When the fight will be long. A compact magazine against a box-fed M16 is a rhythm argument the numbers table cannot settle; groups want volume.
  • When 30 is not enough. The 40-tier at 1.2 – 2 (MSR788 Rifle) is the next honest step; the MSR700 is the rung below it, not the replacement for it.

How It Compares

30-tier rifle Damage Weight Max range Condition
MSR700 Rifle 1 – 1.6 4 30 10
JS-14 Rifle 1 – 1.6 3.5 30 10
M16 Assault Rifle 1 – 1.6 4 30 10
L94 Rifle 1.2 – 2 3.5 30 10

This is the table the MSR700 has to live with: lighter or harder-hitting options at its own reach, and its own answer — the slim feed for deliberate shooting — written in a column only one source publishes. Take the rifle when your plan is one good shot; the worksheet will not settle the argument for you, which is itself the honest verdict.

Sources & Verification

Every printed figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.VarmintRifle:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — MSR700 Rifle Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same weight, damage and max-range fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement — nobody fired this gun in a test sandbox for this page. The noise value and the magazine capacity exist only on the PZwiki side (pzfans has no comparable column), so they are described qualitatively above and never printed as numbers. Spawn locations are omitted for the same one-source reason. PZwiki stamps most firearm pages against builds older than 42.21, so treat this as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to move these numbers eventually.
