FAQ

Is the hunting knife the best knife to find?
Among the blades we can source, yes: 0.6–1.2 damage and a 50% crit both beat the kitchen knife's 0.3–0.7 at 25%. Its weight 1 is heavier than the kitchen knife's 0.7, but the damage and crit are worth the half unit for a weapon you plan to swing.
Does a 50% crit make the hunting knife a top weapon?
It makes it the highest-crit item in the table, but the base is thin: a crit on a 0.6–1.2 roll is a small number, and neither source publishes the crit multiplier, so we cannot tell you what it actually adds. Judge the knife on what is confirmed — the damage band and the 50% frequency.
Why does nothing fall over when I hit with it?
Knockback 0.01 is effectively zero, shared with every kitchen knife and scalpel on these pages. Compare the [baseball bat](/items/baseball-bat/) at 0.5 and the [crowbar](/items/crowbar/) at 0.5 — those stagger, the hunting knife does not.

The Trade in One Line

The hunting knife buys the best raw blade numbers in the common pool — 0.6–1.2 damage and a 50% crit, both the top of any knife we can source — and pays for it in the one stat blades cannot escape: knockback 0.01. It hits harder than any other find-in-a-drawer blade, and it stops nothing.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.6 – 1.2. The highest ceiling of any short blade on these pages — the kitchen knife tops out at 0.7, the meat cleaver at 0.8. The floor of 0.6 already matches the crowbar’s.
  • Crit 50%. The largest crit rate in the entire two-source table — above the bat’s 40% and the shovel’s 40%. On a thin base it is still a small absolute number, and the multiplier is not published by either source.
  • Weight 1. Light enough to be a permanent backup; half a unit above the kitchen knife’s 0.7, far under the baseball bat’s 2.
  • Condition 10. Middling — the bat and crowbar last at 15, the fragile cutlery (bread, steak, fillet knives) at 5. Drain is gated by Maintenance; see the skill leveling guide.
  • Knockback 0.01. The knife’s real tax. Nothing about a hunting-knife hit puts a zombie down or off balance, so a crowd closes while you work one swing at a time.

When Not to Use It

  • When you are outnumbered. 0.01 knockback against a pile-up is a fight you lose slowly. Take a blunt weapon that staggers — the bat or crowbar at 0.5 — and let the knife wait for one-on-one.
  • When one kill must be certain. 0.6–1.2 is a knife’s ceiling; the machete runs 2–3 at the same weight 2 and ends fights in one swing.
  • When condition is the constraint. At 10 it is not the fragile tier, but the bat’s 15 outlasts it on a long run you expect to keep fighting through.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Crit
Hunting Knife 0.6 – 1.2 1 10 0.01 50%
Kitchen Knife 0.3 – 0.7 0.7 10 0.01 25%
Meat Cleaver 0.4 – 0.8 1 10 0.3 15%
Baseball Bat 0.8 – 1.1 2 15 0.5 40%

The honest read: among knives the hunting knife simply wins — double the kitchen knife’s ceiling, twice its crit. Against a blunt weapon it loses the argument that matters in a crowd: the bat’s 0.5 knockback and 15 condition buy survivability that a 50% crit on a small number cannot. Pick it as the best sidearm, not as your line-holder. The weapon tier list sorts by that same durability-and-stagger logic.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.HuntingKnife:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Hunting Knife Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
