FAQ

Is the ice pick the best light weapon?
For damage per unit of weight, yes — 0.6–0.9 at weight 0.3 is the most hitting power in the lightest package we source. Only the [hunting knife](/items/hunting-knife/) has a higher ceiling (1.2 against 0.9), and it pays double the weight (1 against 0.3) and shares the ice pick's 10 condition.
Ice pick or hunting knife?
Weight versus ceiling and crit. The [hunting knife](/items/hunting-knife/) reaches 1.2 and crits 50% of the time; the ice pick tops out at 0.9 and crits at 10%, but it weighs 0.3 against the knife's 1. If inventory is your binding constraint the ice pick wins; if burst is, the hunting knife does.
It is a tool as well — does that help the case?
It makes a 0.3-weight item worth a slot on function alone, but we do not document its tool jobs here: neither source gives us a second, matching figure to print. Judged only on its combat row, the ice pick is the most damage-dense light blade on these pages.

The Trade in One Line

The ice pick is damage density in a tool’s body: 0.6–0.9 — a floor that equals the crowbar’s — at weight 0.3 with condition 10. What you do not get is the two things that make weapons feel decisive: knockback (0.01) and crit luck (10%).

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.6 – 0.9. The strongest small-blade band under the hunting knife; its 0.9 ceiling clears the meat cleaver’s 0.8 and the kitchen knife’s 0.7.
  • Weight 0.3. The table’s floor, shared with the scalpel and letter opener — but those barely hit, and the ice pick does.
  • Condition 10. Full kitchen-blade durability, not the 5 the steak and fillet knives settle for. Drain runs on Maintenance — skill leveling guide.
  • Knockback 0.01. Standard thin-blade none; a hit staggers nothing, unlike the cleaver’s 0.3.
  • Crit 10%. Low tier with the paring knife and screwdriver; the hunting knife’s 50% is the blade luck you are not buying here.

When Not to Use It

  • When burst matters. The hunting knife out-damages and out-crits it; carry that if you can afford weight 1.
  • When you want a line-holder. 0.01 knockback plus a sub-1 ceiling is a duel weapon; the baseball bat at 0.5 knockback and 15 condition is the crowd answer.
  • When durability-per-kill is the metric. A 0.6–0.9 weapon spends its 10 condition over several swings per zombie; the machete’s 2–3 spends fewer.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Crit
Ice Pick 0.6 – 0.9 0.3 10 0.01 10%
Hunting Knife 0.6 – 1.2 1 10 0.01 50%
Crowbar 0.6 – 1.15 2 15 0.5 20%
Screwdriver 0.3 – 0.7 0.5 10 0.01 10%

The ice pick’s slot is the light-blade apex: same 0.6 floor as the hunting knife and crowbar at a third or less of their weight. Versus the screwdriver it is stronger and lighter at the same condition. Its single honest weakness against the crowbar row is what all thin blades share — knockback 0.01 against 0.5, so see the weapon tier list before trusting it in a crowd.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.IcePick:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Ice Pick Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
