Hatchet in Build 42 — Half the Fire Axe's Weight, Most of Its Bite

Build 42 hatchet stats: 0.7–1.5 damage, weight 1.5, condition 10, knockback 0.3, 15% crit. A one-handed axe that punches above its weight but crits at the low tier.

FAQ

Hatchet or fire axe?
Weight versus raw numbers. The [fire axe](/items/fire-axe/) runs 0.8–2 damage on condition 13 at weight 3; the hatchet runs 0.7–1.5 on condition 10 at weight 1.5. The hatchet is a full 1.5 lighter and its floor (0.7) is nearly the fire axe's; you give up the 2-damage ceiling, three condition, and five points of crit (15% against 20%) for the carry savings.
Is 15% crit really that bad?
It is the low tier of the sourced table — the [meat cleaver](/items/meat-cleaver/) and [rolling pin](/items/rolling-pin/) match it, and only the [letter opener](/items/letter-opener/)'s 5% and [fishing rod](/items/fishing-rod/)'s 5% sit under it. On a 0.7–1.5 base it means the hatchet rarely gets its lucky swing; judge it on its high floor, not on crits.
It chops wood too — is it the best axe?
As a weapon with a second job, its numbers justify the slot. We do not document its chopping uses here because we could not source them twice; but even combat-only, a 0.7–1.5 blade at weight 1.5 competes with the dedicated weapons — which the [weapon tier list](/guides/weapon-tier-list/) accounts for when it ranks the axe class.

The Trade in One Line

The hatchet buys axe-tier damage at light-weapon weight: 0.7–1.5 out-ceilings the bat, crowbar and nightstick, all at 1.5 — half the fire axe’s carry cost. What it cannot buy is luck or longevity: 15% crit and condition 10 are the tax.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.7 – 1.5. The strongest light-weapon band we list short of the shovel — its 1.5 ceiling passes the crowbar (1.15) and bat (1.1); the fire axe’s 2 is the next step up.
  • Weight 1.5. Same as the hammer, wrench, pan and nightstick — a full 1.5 under the fire axe and pickaxe, a quarter of the sledgehammer’s 6.
  • Condition 10. Middling — the durable blunt set (bat, crowbar, nightstick) holds 15; the fire and pickaxe axes reach 13. Maintenance gates the drain — skill leveling guide.
  • Knockback 0.3. Nudge tier, same as the machete, wrench and fire axe; no crowd-clearing push.
  • Crit 15%. The low tier — matched by the meat cleaver and rolling pin, with only the 5% and 10% items under it. The axe family’s luck numbers sit here.

When Not to Use It

  • When the fire axe is available and weight is not tight. Same knockback, better damage ceiling (2), better durability (13) — the hatchet’s whole edge is the 1.5 you save.
  • When you need one certain kill. 15% crit on a 1.5 ceiling is a weapon you cannot count on to land big; the hunting knife crits at 50%, the machete just out-damages it outright.
  • Deep in a crowd. 0.3 knockback holds no line; the sledgehammer at 1.0 is the crowd answer.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Crit
Hatchet 0.7 – 1.5 1.5 10 0.3 15%
Fire Axe 0.8 – 2 3 13 0.3 20%
Baseball Bat 0.8 – 1.1 2 15 0.5 40%
Crowbar 0.6 – 1.15 2 15 0.5 20%

The axe-class comparison is clean: the fire axe is the hatchet with a bigger swing and a bigger bill. Against the blunt weapons the hatchet wins the ceiling and loses the durability-plus-knockback package — the bat outlasts and out-crits it, the crowbar outlasts it, and both shove harder. The hatchet earns its slot as the lightest high-ceiling option, not as the safest one.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.HandAxe:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Hatchet Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
