Pipe Wrench in Build 42 — Claw Hammer Damage, Better Crit, Less Shove
Build 42 pipe wrench stats: 0.5–1 damage, weight 1.5, condition 10, knockback 0.3, 25% crit. The claw hammer's twin except on knockback, where it loses.
FAQ
Pipe wrench or claw hammer?
Is the pipe wrench a good weapon?
It is a plumbing tool too — does that make it worth a slot?
The Trade in One Line
The pipe wrench is the claw hammer minus the shove: identical 0.5–1 damage, weight 1.5 and condition 10, but knockback 0.3 instead of the hammer’s 0.5. It is a good, safe mid-tier weapon that gives up the one column — interrupting a zombie — that makes blunt weapons worth swinging.
What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified
- Damage 0.5 – 1. Middle blunt band — the bat tops at 1.1, the crowbar at 1.15, the sledgehammer far above at 2–3.
- Knockback 0.3. Its soft spot: machete and fire axe territory, 0.2 under the claw hammer’s 0.5. Fewer free steps back.
- Weight 1.5. Same as the claw hammer and light tools — a tool-slot that does not burden the pack.
- Condition 10. The durable-middle tier — under the bat’s 15, over the golf club’s 5. Maintenance gates drain — skill leveling guide.
- Crit 25%. Above the hammer’s 20% — the wrench’s one column win — but below the hunting knife’s 50% and the bat’s 40%.
When Not to Use It
- When the hammer is available. Same everything but knockback 0.5 vs 0.3; in a fight the hammer’s extra push is the whole argument.
- When you need crowd control. 0.3 staggers weakly; the bat and crowbar at 0.5, the sledgehammer at 1.0, hold lines better.
- When durability is the point. Condition 10 is fine but not the 15 the bat and nightstick offer for a weapon you keep.
How It Compares
| Weapon | Damage | Weight | Condition | Knockback | Crit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pipe Wrench | 0.5 – 1 | 1.5 | 10 | 0.3 | 25% |
| Claw Hammer | 0.5 – 1 | 1.5 | 10 | 0.5 | 20% |
| Crowbar | 0.6 – 1.15 | 2 | 15 | 0.5 | 20% |
| Nightstick | 0.6 – 1.1 | 1.5 | 15 | 0.3 | 25% |
The wrench and hammer are the same tool with opposite specialties — wrench for crit, hammer for knockback — and only one of those columns (the push) actually changes how a fight feels. The nightstick is the sharper version of the wrench’s exact shape: same 0.3 knockback and 25% crit but a higher band and 15 condition for the same 1.5 weight. The weapon tier list ranks durability-and-stagger above luck, which is why the wrench sits mid.
Sources & Verification
Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.PipeWrench:
| Source | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PZwiki — Pipe Wrench | Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) | Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API |
| pzfans — Weapon item tables | Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” | Independent rendering of the same fields |
What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
