Bread Knife in Build 42 — Why 0.1–0.4 Damage and Condition 5 Do Not Add Up
Build 42 bread knife stats: 0.1–0.4 damage, weight 1, condition 5, knockback 0.01, 15% crit. Same slot cost as the meat cleaver, a fraction of the fighting.

The Trade in One Line
The bread knife’s row is the simplest no in the whole two-source table: full knife weight (1) for half-use numbers — 0.1–0.4 damage, knockback 0.01, condition 5. There is no stat on which it wins against its own family, which is exactly what this page is for.
What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified
- Damage 0.1 – 0.4. Bottom of the cutlery band, tied with the scalpel; the kitchen knife’s floor (0.3) is near the bread knife’s ceiling.
- Weight 1. The unforgivable line: identical to the meat cleaver and hunting knife, which both out-damage it by a wide margin. You pay full price for a weaker blade.
- Condition 5. The fragile tier. At 0.1–0.4 per swing the durability-per-kill math is the worst on these pages. Maintenance slows the drain — see the skill leveling guide — but it cannot change the ceiling.
- Knockback 0.01. Family-standard none. Nothing moves; you are inside reach with no interrupt.
- Crit 15%. Shared with the cleaver as the table’s floor — on a 0.1–0.4 base it means almost nothing.
When Not to Use It
- When anything else in the drawer is available. The kitchen knife gives double the ceiling at 0.7 weight and 10 condition; the hunting knife gives 0.6–1.2 at 50% crit.
- On any planned fight. Condition 5 is an accident weapon. If you know you will swing, bring the baseball bat at 15 condition.
- When inventory is tight. Weight 1 buys zero advantages over the lighter, harder-hitting steak knife at 0.5.
How It Compares
| Weapon | Damage | Weight | Condition | Knockback | Crit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bread Knife | 0.1 – 0.4 | 1 | 5 | 0.01 | 15% |
| Kitchen Knife | 0.3 – 0.7 | 0.7 | 10 | 0.01 | 25% |
| Steak Knife | 0.3 – 0.7 | 0.5 | 5 | 0.01 | 25% |
| Hunting Knife | 0.6 – 1.2 | 1 | 10 | 0.01 | 50% |
Two rows make the argument: versus the kitchen knife the bread knife loses on damage, weight, condition and crit — all four. Versus the hunting knife at the same weight 1 it loses by a full tier. The only sourced kitchen blade it beats is the scalpel, and only on crit (15% against 10%). That is not a niche; it is a dead end — the same verdict the weapon tier list applies to the cutlery class.
Sources & Verification
Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.BreadKnife:
| Source | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PZwiki — Bread Knife | Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) | Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API |
| pzfans — Weapon item tables | Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” | Independent rendering of the same fields |
What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
