TL;DR — Farming Progression Map Cross-Verified

The Knox Event starts in July, so a fresh save plants inside the summer/late window — radish, lettuce, turnip, garlic, kale — and everything else waits for the next spring window.

July–Aug: Sow the July/August window (radish, lettuce, kale, garlic, turnip); start grain in August
Sep–Oct: Last grain and garlic sowings; harvest summer crops
Nov–Dec: Preserve the harvest — nothing new goes in the ground
Feb–Apr: The big vegetable window opens again (potato, cabbage, carrot, onion, strawberry)
Year 1 spring: Build pen → tame chicken → compost → cows and sheep

Full month-by-month windows for all 55 crops: Build 42 crop calendar.

Seasonal Farming — Plant Outside the Window and the Crop Is Cursed Cross-Verified

Build 42’s biggest farming change: seasons matter. Plant outside the window and the crop fails — the sources word it differently (“cursed”, “hostile months”) but agree on the outcome. December through February curses everything unless it is cold hardy.

Crop Calendar — The Core Crops Cross-Verified

Crop Planting months Days to harvest Min water Cold hardy Notes
Potato Feb-Apr 90 60 no Spring staple; plan storage around the food preservation lanes
Carrots Feb-Jul 90 30 no Long window, low water need
Cabbage Feb-Jul 60 80 yes One of seven winter-survivable crops
Corn Mar-May 90 30 no Spring sowing only — not the summer crop B41 players remember
Tomato Apr-Jun 90 70 no Long grow; process promptly
Strawberry Feb-Apr 90 80 no Thirsty; single-season in the verified table
Winter Wheat Aug-Oct 108 30 yes Mill → flour → bread → animal feed
Kale Feb-Aug 60 70 yes Widest window plus winter hardiness
Garlic Jul-Sep 240 30 yes Plant in autumn, harvest next year
Barley / Rye / Flax Aug-Oct 108 30 yes Autumn grain and fibre block

Days assume the default Farming Speed 1.0 sandbox setting; each growth phase carries a small random offset. The full 55-crop table, month-by-month lists and the winter rules are on the crop calendar page.

Farm Layout Recommendations

Plot Size Best For Notes
3×3 plots Early game Potato/Carrot Fits in backyard, easy to water
5×5 plots Mid-game mixed garden Enough variety for self-sufficiency
10×10 plots Large-scale farming Needs sprinkler + wheelbarrow setup

Pro tip: Build a rain collector adjacent to your garden. Watering cans are annoying. Build a gravity-fed system from rain collector to plot = zero-effort watering.

Farming Skill — How to Level Fast

Activity XP Gain Best Method
Planting seeds Low XP Plant + remove weeds = small but steady
Watering crops Tiny XP Don’t rely on this
Harvesting crops High XP The only loop that pays: 30-240 days per crop depending on variety. Highest per-crop activity
Composting Very High XP Add rot fruit + weeds to composter. Produces fertilizer + massive XP
Processing (sauce, flour) Medium XP Mill wheat → flour, tomato → sauce

Optimal leveling path: Composter spam. Fill composter with every rot piece of food you find. Collect fertilizer → sell (in trade with NPCs later) or use on your own crops. 5 composters = Farming Lv.5 in 3 weeks.

Build 42 Animal Types — Full Breakdown

Build 42 added 10 new animal types to Knox County. Split into 3 categories:

Domestic (Tame, Farmable)

Animal Found Wild? Taming Method Diet Product Stress Level Notes
Chicken Yes (rare feral flocks) Feed wheat 2× Wheat, seeds, grass Eggs (1/day) Low Easiest to start. Build a 3×3 fenced pen. 2 chickens = sustainable egg farm
Cow Yes (pastures near rural towns) Feed wheat + pet daily Grass, hay, wheat Milk (1/2 days) + Leather + Steak Medium 1 cow = self-sufficient milk. Needs more space (5×5 pen)
Sheep Yes (flocks near Rosewood) Feed wheat + pet weekly Grass, hay Wool (shear 1/month) + Mutton Low Wool → cloth → better clothing. 3 sheep = annual wool production

Wild (Hunt or Trap)

Animal Where to Find What It Drops Difficulty
Rabbit Everywhere (fields, forests) Raw Rabbit Meat (1), Fur Very Low — traps or stones
Deer Deep forests Raw Deer Meat (3), Leather (1), Antlers Medium — long range + fast. Bow best
Wolf Map edges (north/south) Raw Wolf Meat (3), Fur (2), Teeth High — dangerous. Hunt in groups
Bear Map edges (caves + remote forests) Raw Bear Meat (5), Fur (3), Claws Very High — 2-hit you. Only hunt with Axe Lv.5+
Raccoon Suburban areas Raw Raccoon Meat (1), Fur Low — traps
Fox Forests Raw Fox Meat (1), Fur Low — traps

Animal Stress — The Hidden Build 42 Mechanic Cross-Verified

Build 42 animals have a hidden stress bar that affects:

  • Egg/milk production frequency
  • Chance of escaping
  • Health (high stress = stops eating, dies)

Stress Accumulation

Cause Stress Added Time Until Death
No food +1/hour 48 hours
No water +2/hour 24 hours
Dirty pen (rotten feed) +1/hour 36 hours
Alone (no other animal) +1/day 3-5 days
No petting +0.5/day Slow accumulation

Stress Reduction

Method Stress Removed Frequency
Right-click → Pet −10% Daily (click each animal)
Feeding treats (herbs, veg) −20% Twice weekly
Cleaning pen (remove rot) −15% When you see rot
Adding another animal −10% (social bonus) Permanent

Practical daily routine: Feed → Water → Pet each animal → Check pen for rot. Takes 5 minutes. Do this every day and stress stays at 0.

Stress Threshold Effects

Stress Level Effect
0-30% Normal — full production
30-60% −50% egg/milk production
60-90% Escapes pen, refuses to eat
90-100% Dies (24-48 hours)

Beginner Animal Setup — Step by Step

Phase 1: Chickens (Week 2)

  1. Build a 3×3 fenced pen — 12 fence posts + 12 planks + hammer
  2. Find 1-2 chickens — search rural farms, forest edges, or use a trap (trap = planks + wire + Foraging Lv.2)
  3. Tame them — hold wheat in hand, slowly approach, click Feed. 2-3 feeds = tamed
  4. Wait for eggs — 1 chicken = 1 egg/day (if fed + stress-free)
  5. Hatch more chickens — egg + heat source (campfire) → new chick in 7 days
  6. Expand to 4-5 chickens — sustainable production, no need to hunt

Phase 2: Composter + Fertilizer (Week 3)

  1. Build 3-5 composters — 3 planks + 20 rot items + Farming Lv.1 each
  2. Fill with rot food + weeds — every piece of rot you don’t eat goes here
  3. Wait 7 days — produces fertilizer + massive Farming XP
  4. Fertilize your crops — 1 compost = 1 plot, +50% yield

Phase 3: Cows/Sheep (Week 4-6)

  1. Build a 5×5 pen (needs more space than chicken)
  2. Find a cow/sheep — search farms (Rosewood, Muldraugh edges) or trap
  3. Tame — feed wheat 3× + pet daily for 3 days
  4. Build a hay rack (planks + wire) — stores grass for winter
  5. Milking/shearing — Milk bucket needed for cows. Shears needed for sheep (loot hardware stores)

Winter Prep — Don’t Starve When It’s Cold

Item How Much Why
Dried meat (beef jerky, rabbit jerky) 20+ pieces Preserves meat for winter
Canned food looted 30+ cans 1 can = 1 meal. B42 canned food spawn is lower than B41
Wheat bundle 40+ Animal feed through winter
Hay 20 bundles Winter animal feed (animals can’t graze in snow)
Water containers 10+ Rain collector freezes in winter. Store filled bottles

Animal Husbandry FAQ

Q: Do I need the Animal Care skill?

It helps. Higher Animal Care = faster taming, lower stress accumulation, better productivity. But you can manage with Farming Lv.3 + daily petting. Animal Care is mainly for reducing stress accumulation speed.

Q: Can chickens survive winter?

Yes, if you give them shelter + feed + water. Build a small wooden coop inside their pen. Don’t let the pen freeze solid — they can’t access water in snow.

Q: How do I catch a chicken that ran away?

Run after it. Chickens are slow and don’t run far. If it gets outside your fence, close the gap with a new fence post. They’ll wander back to their pen within a day if fed.

Q: Is hunting deer worth it or should I trap rabbits?

Trapping rabbits takes 2 minutes per rabbit, gives 1 meat. Hunting a deer gives 3 meat + leather + antlers but takes 5+ minutes + risk. For early game: trap rabbits. For mid-game deer/leather needs: bow hunt deer.

Q: Do wolves and bears actually attack players?

Yes. They spawn at map edges (north of Rosewood, west of Riverside). A bear will two-shot kill an unarmored character. Never go to map edges alone without Axe Lv.5+. They also don’t spawn in Louisville — stick to the map center if you’re underleveled.

Q: Can I breed animals?

Chickens: yes (egg + heat source). Cows/sheep: Build 42 stable does not support breeding them — you need to find or tame more. Community guides describe it as coming later, but TIS has published no breeding patch, so treat “planned” as an expectation rather than a dated commitment.
