FAQ

Steak knife or kitchen knife?
The damage and crit are identical — 0.3–0.7 at 25% — so the choice is weight versus lifespan. The [kitchen knife](/items/kitchen-knife/) weighs 0.7 but lasts twice as long at condition 10; the steak knife saves you 0.2 weight and dies at 5. For one emergency swing the steak knife is lighter; for a weapon you keep, the kitchen knife is the right buy.
Is 0.5 weight actually meaningful?
Only at the margins. It is the lightest full-damage knife in the table — heavier only than the paring knife (0.3), [scalpel](/items/scalpel/) (0.3) and [letter opener](/items/letter-opener/) (0.3) — but those three hit far below its band. If you want a knife you will actually swing more than once, none of them is the answer.
Why is condition 5 such a big deal on a knife?
Because a knife's damage is already low: at 0.3–0.7 you need several swings per kill, and swings are what spend condition. A 5-condition weapon with a sub-1 damage ceiling is the worst durability-per-kill shape in the sourced table apart from the [fishing rod](/items/fishing-rod/).

The Trade in One Line

The steak knife is the same blade economics as the kitchen knife minus half the life: 0.3–0.7 damage and 25% crit, unchanged, at weight 0.5 instead of 0.7 — but condition 5 instead of 10. It exists for one question: do you value 0.2 weight more than five swings.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.3 – 0.7. Character-for-character the kitchen knife’s band — mid-cutlery, under the hunting knife’s 0.6–1.2.
  • Weight 0.5. Its whole claim: the lightest way to carry a usable knife band. Under the kitchen knife’s 0.7, a tenth of the sledgehammer’s 6.
  • Condition 5. The price, paid up front. The fragile tier alongside bread and fillet knives; the crowbar and bat do triple at 15. Maintenance slows drain but cannot change the ceiling — skill leveling guide.
  • Knockback 0.01. Family none — same as every kitchen blade; the meat cleaver at 0.3 is the one knife-family stagger you are giving up here.
  • Crit 25%. Kitchen-knife level; respectable on paper, nearly meaningless on a 0.3–0.7 base.

When Not to Use It

  • When you will swing more than a few times. Condition 5 says this is a ditch weapon. The kitchen knife’s 10 doubles your budget for 0.2 weight.
  • When a stagger matters. 0.01 interrupts nothing; if you want a light blade that pushes, the cleaver at 0.3 is the sourced option.
  • When the real fight is coming. The weapon tier list ranks the whole cutlery class as last-resort; any blunt weapon at weight 2 wins the engagement outright.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Crit
Steak Knife 0.3 – 0.7 0.5 5 0.01 25%
Kitchen Knife 0.3 – 0.7 0.7 10 0.01 25%
Paring Knife 0.3 – 0.4 0.3 10 0.01 10%
Fillet Knife 0.3 – 0.5 0.7 5 0.01 10%

The steak-versus-kitchen row is the exact trade written out: identical damage, identical crit, and 0.2 weight bought with 5 condition. The paring knife is the third option — lighter again (0.3) and twice the life (10), but its ceiling stops at 0.4. There is no free lunch among the 0.3-floor blades: pick your sacrifice.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.SteakKnife:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Steak Knife Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
