Paring Knife in Build 42 — The Lightest Blade That Is Not Garbage

FAQ

Is the paring knife better than the steak knife?
They answer different questions. The [steak knife](/items/steak-knife/) has a wider ceiling (0.7 against 0.4) and double the crit (25% against 10%); the paring knife is lighter (0.3 against 0.5) and lasts twice as long (10 condition against 5). If you want more punch per swing take the steak knife; if you want a backup that survives, take the paring.
Why does a tiny knife have normal durability?
Because condition and damage are separate columns in the sourced table. The paring knife shares the [kitchen knife](/items/kitchen-knife/)'s condition 10 while weighing less and hitting for less — durability is not scaled to size here, it is its own field.
What is the paring knife's actual role?
Weight. At 0.3 it is the lightest of the ten-condition blades — you can carry it as a guaranteed backup without paying for it. It is not a primary weapon: its 0.3–0.4 band is the narrowest of any knife we list.

The Trade in One Line

The paring knife is the weight weenie of the blade family: 0.3, the lightest weapon here that still holds a normal 10 condition. What you surrender is punch — a tight 0.3–0.4 band, the narrowest of any knife, with a 10% crit that fires rarely and on a tiny base.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.3 – 0.4. The narrowest knife band we source: a ceiling of 0.4, under the steak/kitchen knives’ 0.7 and the hunting knife’s 1.2. Expect the same low number every swing.
  • Weight 0.3. Tied with the scalpel and letter opener as the lightest items on these pages — but unlike them it carries 10 condition instead of 5.
  • Condition 10. The quiet win: the full kitchen-knife tier of durability at weight 0.3 against the steak knife’s 0.5. Drain is Maintenance-gated — skill leveling guide.
  • Knockback 0.01. Family-standard none; the meat cleaver remains the only cutlery stagger at 0.3.
  • Crit 10%. The table’s low tier with the fillet knife and scalpels; on a 0.4 ceiling it is rounding.

When Not to Use It

  • When you can carry 0.2 more. The steak knife’s wider 0.3–0.7 and 25% crit are worth the fraction of weight — if durability were equal, but it is not (5 against 10).
  • When the swing budget is the enemy. Ten condition on a 0.3–0.4 weapon still needs many swings per kill; the baseball bat at 15 and 0.8–1.1 ends fights with fewer.
  • As a crowd tool. 0.01 knockback is nothing; see the blunt weapons in the weapon tier list for anything that staggers.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Crit
Paring Knife 0.3 – 0.4 0.3 10 0.01 10%
Steak Knife 0.3 – 0.7 0.5 5 0.01 25%
Kitchen Knife 0.3 – 0.7 0.7 10 0.01 25%
Fillet Knife 0.3 – 0.5 0.7 5 0.01 10%

The paring knife’s unique cell in this grid is weight 0.3 with condition 10 — nobody else combines them. It is worse-damaging than the steak and kitchen knives, but it is the only 0.3-tier blade that is not disposable (the fillet knife at the same 10-crit sits on half the life). Carried as insurance, it earns its 0.3.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.KnifeParing:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Paring Knife Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
