FAQ

Is the screwdriver a good weapon?
A good light one, not a primary. Its 0.3–0.7 damage band and condition 10 exactly match the [kitchen knife](/items/kitchen-knife/) at 0.5 weight against its 0.7. Where it falls short is crit — 10% against the kitchen knife's 25% — and 0.01 knockback, so it neither ends fights quickly nor staggers.
It is a tool too — does that change the maths?
We publish only the fields both sources agree on, and neither gives a second opinion on its tool uses, so we do not list them here. What the numbers imply on their own: a dual-purpose item is worth a slot at 0.5 weight even when its combat ceiling is modest.
Screwdriver or steak knife?
Same damage band (0.3–0.7) and nearly the same weight (0.5). The [steak knife](/items/steak-knife/) doubles your crit (25% against 10%); the screwdriver doubles your durability (10 condition against 5). For a weapon you expect to keep, the screwdriver's 10 is the better buy.

The Trade in One Line

The screwdriver is the best damage-per-weight blade in the low tier: the kitchen knife’s 0.3–0.7 and 10 condition squeezed into 0.5 weight. The price is luck and shove — a 10% crit and 0.01 knockback — which is why it is a smart backup, not a line-holder.

What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified

  • Damage 0.3 – 0.7. Kitchen-knife band; the floor matches the steak and fillet knives, the ceiling matches the kitchen knife and stops under the hunting knife’s 1.2.
  • Weight 0.5. The whole argument: full 10-condition durability at steak-knife lightness, a tenth of the sledgehammer’s 6.
  • Condition 10. The full kitchen-knife tier — double the scalpel’s 5, two-thirds of the crowbar’s 15. Maintenance governs drain — skill leveling guide.
  • Knockback 0.01. Cutlery none, like every light blade; the meat cleaver at 0.3 is the one stagger you cannot have here.
  • Crit 10%. Low tier with the paring knife and scalpel — the kitchen knife’s 25% is what you trade away for the 0.2 weight saved.

When Not to Use It

  • When durability is not your constraint and luck is. The kitchen knife’s 25% crit out-performs it in a single exchange; the screwdriver wins only the carrying game.
  • In a crowd. 0.01 knockback on a 0.3–0.7 base is a slow, interrupt-free grind — take a blunt weapon that staggers from the weapon tier list.
  • When you want one-hit kills. Anything in the 2–3 tier — machete, sledgehammer — ends what a screwdriver works through.

How It Compares

Weapon Damage Weight Condition Knockback Crit
Screwdriver 0.3 – 0.7 0.5 10 0.01 10%
Kitchen Knife 0.3 – 0.7 0.7 10 0.01 25%
Steak Knife 0.3 – 0.7 0.5 5 0.01 25%
Ice Pick 0.6 – 0.9 0.3 10 0.01 10%

The screwdriver’s row is the efficient corner: same damage and condition as the kitchen knife, less weight, less crit; same weight as the steak knife, twice its life. The ice pick below it, though, is the sharper tool-weapon — higher band, lighter, same condition — which is why the next page exists.

Sources & Verification

Every figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.Screwdriver:

Source Type Notes
PZwiki — Screwdriver Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API
pzfans — Weapon item tables Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” Independent rendering of the same fields

What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement, and PZwiki stamps most item pages against an older 42.10-era build while flagging that they may lag the current release. Treat these as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to change them eventually. Spawn locations are deliberately absent from this page: we could not source them twice, so we do not print them.
