The Trade in One Line
This is the double barrel after the hacksaw: 1.2–1.8 damage, an 8-tile max range, weight 3, condition 10. You buy exactly one unit of portability and pay for it with the damage ceiling and most of the reach. Its niche is not fighting better — it is being present where a full shotgun is not: the vehicle, the sleeping bag, the door you breach.
What the Numbers Mean in Play Cross-Verified
- Damage 1.2 – 1.8. The band ends above every handgun’s ceiling — the B-F and Magnum top out at 1.6 — and below the full family’s 2.2. First shot into anything at close range is still the hardest punch per trigger this weight can offer.
- Max range 8 tiles. The shortest of any shotgun, the same ceiling as the SN38 — this gun only exists inside the fence (firearms guide). Past the porch you are carrying a loud pistol with extra steps.
- Weight 3. The whole point: a full unit under the doubles, matching the other sawed-off, light enough to be the gun that is always there. Compare the machete’s 2 — the sawed-off asks one more unit for its chaos.
- Condition 10. Shotgun family standard, sawn or not. Maintenance gates wear (skill leveling guide).
- Report. Nothing about shortening the barrel shortened the noise argument — a blast in a hallway is a decision to fight the hallway afterwards. Loud is a strategy; see the high-risk POIs page for when it is not.
- Feed. Twin barrels, shortened with everything else — the opening is fast and final, and the reload is the most exposed moment of your fight.
When Not to Use It
- When the full doubles is an option. Same family, better everywhere but weight: Double Barrel Shotgun at 1.5 – 2.2 and 15 tiles for one more unit.
- When you want the better sawed-off. The Sawed-off JS-2000 outscores this gun on damage (1.3 – 2), reach (10 tiles) and feed at the identical weight 3.
- Anywhere a rifle reaches. Eight tiles against the carbines’ 20 and the rifles’ 30–40 is not a trade the noise can survive in the open (Trapper Carbine).
How It Compares
| Shotgun | Damage | Weight | Max range | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sawed-off Double Barrel | 1.2 – 1.8 | 3 | 8 | 10 |
| Sawed-off JS-2000 | 1.3 – 2 | 3 | 10 | 10 |
| Double Barrel Shotgun | 1.5 – 2.2 | 4 | 15 | 10 |
| Magnum (sidearm) | 1 – 1.6 | 2 | 18 | 10 |
The table is the whole product review: at the same weight 3 the pump-sawn JS-2000 beats this gun on both combat columns, so the sawed-off doubles survives on the barrels’ opening rhythm and availability, not on numbers. And the Magnum row is the sting — half a unit lighter, more than double the reach, one band below in damage. Where the family ranks overall: weapon tier list.
Sources & Verification
Every printed figure on this page is agreed by two independent sources we can read today, matched by the in-game item ID Base.DoubleBarrelShotgunSawnoff:
| Source | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PZwiki — Sawed-off Double Barrel Shotgun | Semi-official wiki (declared an official site of The Indie Stone, volunteer-maintained) | Infobox fields read via its MediaWiki API |
| pzfans — Weapon item tables | Community data, stamped “Verified for Build 42.20.4” | Independent rendering of the same weight, damage and max-range fields |
What this is not. Neither source is our own measurement — nobody fired this gun in a test sandbox for this page. The noise value and the barrel capacity exist only on the PZwiki side (pzfans has no comparable column), so they are described qualitatively above and never printed as numbers. Per-shell pellet behavior is likewise single-source and absent here. Spawn locations are omitted for the same one-source reason. PZwiki stamps this page against a 41.x-era build and most of the set likewise predates 42.21, so treat this as 42.20-era agreement rather than 42.21-verified, and expect a patch note to move these numbers eventually.
